During the first year of a child’s life their feet grow rapidly, reaching almost half their adult size. By the age of 12, a child’s foot is about 90% of its adult length.
Many adult foot problems have their origins in childhood.
This is why an assessment of the child's foot, posture and function can be an important step in preventing future problems. |

Indicators of abnormal foot function include:
» foot pain » fatigue » flat feet » knock knees » heel pain » in-toe gait, and » abnormal shoe wear
Tinea, warts and infected ingrown toenails are common foot complaints of childhood and adolescence. |

Children’s feet are not simply little adult’s feet – they have a unique developmental pattern of their own. A podiatry check-up is recommended if:
» there is a family history of foot or lower limb problems » you notice uneven shoe wear » you notice any skin rashes, hard skin, lumps or bumps on the feet » your child complains of recurrent pain in the feet or legs » your child is constantly tripping and falling, or, » you have any other concerns about your children’s feet.
At Lane Cove Podiatry we can provide treatment and advice for any of these conditions if they are present.
