The foot at risk

Care of the of the foot at risk is a major concern of your podiatrist.

There are several conditions which would put a foot into a high risk category.

These include patients with conditions such as diabetes or who have peripheral vascular disease, neuropathic  changes or those on medications such as anticoagulants or long-term steroid use.

The sporting foot
Injuries to the foot and lower limb make up a large proportion of sporting injuries.

Sporting activities be it walking, running or jumping place higher demands on the body than those experienced through normal day to day activities.

Imbalance in our feet and legs that remain unnoticed in day to day activities may cause injuries due to the repeated strains of sporting activities.

The diabetic foot
People with diabetes are at greater risk of developing serious foot problems because they are more likely to experience reduced blood circulation and nerve degeneration in their feet and legs causing a reduced ability to fight infection and heal wounds.

Diabetes Australia recommends that people with diabetes see podiatrists at least once every 12 months.

In our diabetic assessment we examine your circulation by palpation of pulses and use of a Doppler examine sensation using monofilaments and testing reflex and vibration sensitivity.

Foot posture and function is also assessed and footwear advice given.
